The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine is a document written by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders of Google in the early days before it was a "company".  In it, they explain how Google works including PageRank as they conceptualized it back then. I was participating in and following a discussion on LinkedIn
